Chorley Heritage Trail Location 4

By the churchyard gate are steps leading downward. This used to be the old main road through Chorley until 1822. Pass the steps to your right, walk by the roadside railings, to pass the church tower to the right. Continue on the path looking right through the railings to see an old archway in the wall. This gave access to the church from the 16th to the 18th century. Note the pub ‘Swan with Two Necks’ formerly two private houses. Opposite the ‘Swan’ is Chorcliffe House former home of the Silvester Family, benefactors of the Parish Church. Cross Park Road. To the right you will see a large stone arch with gates which bears the inscription ‘PRO PATRIA’ 1914 - 1918.
